We’ve just had a meeting with David Crook of the CLA, about the new (comprehensive) Higher Education Licence, which covers photocopying, scanning, and now digital use. You can read the new licence user guidelines, at: http://www.cla.co.uk/assets/169/uukguildhe_userguidelines.pdf Key differences between the old licence and the new: We’re now permitted to photocopy material published in Italy and [...]

Ta ta, SendMeRSS – hello FeedBurner
A few people have talked to me about problems with the SendMeRSS.com link that I’d put on this blog (and the others) to allow people to subscribe to the RSS feed(s) by email. Basically, it was very slow at delivering new blog posts by email, or it just wasn’t working. In fact, their Web site [...]
Athens problems – update
On the 3rd, I wrote about some ongoing Athens problems. An update: the big, underlying problem – that certain databases aren’t allowing direct access via Athens because of an out-of-date system file – is still happening, and as of today is also affecting the Global Market Information Database (a.k.a. Euromonitor). So, the list is now: [...]
Blogs·Library·Lincoln software upgraded
I’ve just upgraded our installation of WordPress MU for Blogs·Library·Lincoln to the latest version, 2.6.3. And nearly broken the blogs in the process. Note my use of the word ‘nearly’!
SPSS licence code on Portal
The off-campus licence code for using SPSS 14 at home… is now on the Portal: https://portal.lincoln.ac.uk/C11/C14/SPSScode/ I’ve done this (at Oonagh’s request) so that we’ve a way of referring students to the code without passing it over email (unsecure). It gets updated every year, apparently.
Farewell Ruth Gill
With sad hearts, we bid a fond farewell to Ruth yesterday. Thanks to your kind words and generosity she was rendered speechless for at least 10 seconds when we surprised her in the afternoon with presents and a card. The celebrations continued into the evening when a group of us joined Ruth for a meal [...]
Online enquiry desk “tick sheet” ready
The new on-line enquiry desk “tick sheet” has now been loaded on to the 3rd floor enquiry desk PC (thanks, Dave Masterson!). It is easy to use – every time you log on to the 3rd floor desk PC, a new desktop icon will be present which you simply double click on to open up [...]
I can read you like an OpenBook
I’ve just installed the OpenBook plugin for WordPress, which allows you to display bibliographic data from the Open Library, including book cover thumbnail images, in a WordPress blog post or page. By default, the plugin provides both a link to the Open Library record (via the hyperlinked title of the book), plus a link to [...]
ASL support for Technology
Following Paul’s secondment to the position of E-Resources Librarian, Daren Mansfield has agreed to support Computing and Media Technology. Daren will be meeting David Cobham, Head of Computing, next week, and will be finalising arrangements to take over from Paul. Daren will continue to support Journalism and CERD, and we very much appreciate his willingness [...]
ERL: priorities
After a bit of discussion with SMT, we think that this is a good-as-any list of topics on which to concentrate in my first few months as Electronic Resources Librarian. In no particular order: Development of new public Web presence Copyright and licencing guidance Launch of ebrary (with Acquisitions Team; Chris L.) A new approach [...]
