Trips to British Library at Boston Spa

leave a comment

Two trips to the British Library for this year have been arranged:

Wednesday 24th November 2010 (slips must be in by 3pm on Monday 15th November)
Thursday 17th February 2011 (slips must be in by 3pm on Tuesday 8th February)

The trips will leave from outside the library at 8-15am.  They will return back to the university at around 6pm.  Students must book a place at the ground floor library desk and pay a reservation fee of £5.  When they book, please give the students a booking pack which includes a guide to using the Boston Spa reading room, request slips, and help guides for completing the slips and what to expect on the day.

It is essential that students fill out slips prior to their visit.  These must be returned to myself the week before the trip – for the exact dates, see above.  Please check that the shelf number (required for journals as well as books); date of visit, name, address and tel number of student is stated on the forms.

More information and guidance is available on the Portal, including help sheets instructing students on how to fill out the forms as well as how to prepare for their visit and what to expect on the day.

Thank you

Marie

The Learning Development room

leave a comment

The Library meeting room on the ground floor is now known as the Learning Development room.  This room will be the main area for ASL subject support & learning development as well as John Flynn’s Maths & Statistics Centre.  Students are no longer able to book this room. Library staff can book the room using Outlook.  The folder is located in Folder List > Public Folders > All Public folders >Library and Learning Resources > Library room bookings > Learning Development room.

You can add the calendar to your own Outlook calendar area (so that you don’t have to follow the above route to access it) by:

  • Right clicking on Learning Development room (in the Library room bookings folder)
  • Selecting Add to Favourites
  • Clicking on Add

leave a comment

Pete Mennell has set up access to TV channels via the VLC Media Player.
All you need to do is:

Control panel > Run advertised programmes > GNU VLC Media Player 0.8.6 > run

This will add it to your desktop.

Double click on the VLC icon > select the bullet point tab > manage > services directory > SAP announcements > session announcements (SAP) > all.

This will enable access to TV channels.

Also, ULTV is now live.

Jerome: reimagining the library’s online presence

leave a comment

We started some work today on a little ‘un-project’ that’s going to run over the summer: “Jerome” is going to create some live, working demos of a number of different possible approaches to how we present our library services on the web…

In particular:

  • Resource search and discovery;
  • Access to items / delivery services;
  • Lists;
  • Time & place data (maps, calendars);
  • Authentication [maybe...]

We’ve created a dedicated Jerome blog at: http://jerome.blogs.lincoln.ac.uk/ – we’ll go into detail about the development work there, but I’ll post occasional updates to this blog as well.

(Why “Jerome”?)

HiP to go

leave a comment

As an experiment, Chris L. and I have switched on a version of the library catalogue which may be more suited to reduced-width mobile browsers than our everyday, familiar green-and-white version.

It’s not really a true mobile interface – it’s the stripped-down version of HiP designed to be compliant with the ADA – the Americans with Disabilities Act – which governs website accessibility in the ‘States. And we’re already getting reports that it hasn’t improved the situation for users of Windows Mobile operating systems and browsers (which seem to have problems with the way HiP links through to individual bibliographic records).

However, it does seem to work tolerably well on iPhones / Android phones, and it should certainly be an improvement on the full-width version, which is all that’s been available until now. It looks fairly crude, at the moment, but it could be smartened up with little trouble.

Give it a go! If you point your phone / mobile device at www.library.lincoln.ac.uk, you should be automatically directed to the mobile version of the catalogue.

Thanks to @alexbilbie for the pic.

Repositories Support Project – Summer School 2010

leave a comment

The recent RSP Summer School took place 2-4 June 2010 at Madingley Hall, just outside Cambridge. It is a Tudor House once rented by Queen Victoria for Edward, Prince of Wales, while he was away at University.  Madingley Hall is surrounded by magnificent historic gardens designed by Capability Brown.

Over the three days, delegates heard talks and presentations from a host of invited speakers, covering a wide range of topics relating to the management and administration of institutional repositories.

Workshops exploring best practice gave delegates the opportunity to explore issues in more depth.  There were numerous networking opportunities which gave delegates the chance to speak to peers, as well as talk to the various experts.

The programme and slides from this event can be found by clicking on the link below:

New books

leave a comment

We have recently bought these lovely books:

Sauers, M (2009) Searching 2.0
McKnight, S (2010) Envisioning future academic library services
Cornish, G (2009) Copyright: Interpreting the law for libraries, archives and information services
Grix, J and Watkins, G (2010) Information skills: finding and using the right resources
Allan, B (2009) Supporting research students

Jill has very kindly catalogued them and given them the location ‘subject librarians office’; when  we re-organise our office we will find a suitable place for them, but until then they are on my desk - feel free to borrow them.
