We’re getting another spate of queries across the desk, and sent to RefWorks@lincoln.ac.uk, from students who are confused (understandably) about the procedure for logging in to RefWorks or Write-N-Cite when presented with an unhelpful and baffling ‘RefWorks login center‘ screen asking for a ‘Group Code’. That ‘Group Code’ is a red herring. We don’t use [...]

If it’s DreamSpark, it must be October…
October is the month when n-hundred first-year students on journalism, media, and computing programmes seem all at once to discover Microsoft’s DreamSpark software offer. DreamSpark provides access to a range of professional Microsoft tools (including MS Visual Studio, MS SQL server, and XNA Game Studio), all free to students in the UK. Unfortunately it’s not [...]
Attaching a RefWorks account to a Blackboard site
I’m writing this here because Julian asked for a reminder on how to do it (I had to remind myself first!) and thought a permanent record in the blog would be more useful than an ephemeral email. Also: I’ve an idea that it may be useful to combine this with my process for creating new [...]
Tidying up the A-to-Z
Hopefully, you should have noticed a few recent changes to the Electronic Journals A-to-Z. First, we’ve all but completed the summer campaign to improve the accuracy of the 60-odd individual e-journal package holding files. Di, Adele, Carole, Phil, Elif and I have been working through each package in turn and using the most up-to-date information from [...]
It’s Athens stats time again
The usage data for Athens authentication sessions for the 2nd quarter of 2009 are now available on the L&LR staff Portal. The initial impression is a promising one: overall usage via Athens is up 11% on the same period last year. However, this figure masks some unusual features – while authentication via Athens to the [...]
Jargon
Last year’s away day actions recommended that we “develop a jargon list of terms to help international students to understand commonly used library terminology”. Di, Graham and I have begun to create a list of terms L&LR use which probably confuse many students, international or not. Below is a list of (possibly) confusing synonyms and [...]
Athens stats for Jan-Feb-Mar ’09
The Athens stats for the first quarter of 2009 are in, and they’re on the Portal now for L&LR colleagues to view. No great surprises in store – though the graph [below] does suggest a sharper-than-usual fall from 2008/4 to 2009/1. Perhaps we should expect this as a feature of higher usage at peak periods: [...]
Athens – I was right (give or take a thousand)
My prediction was that our quarterly Athens usage would hit 90,000 for Oct-Nov-Dec 2008. I wasn’t far off. Actual figure = 89,183. Overall usage is up by 32% on the same quarter last year. Three databases/services in particular have shown massive jumps: IHS Technical Indexes (presumably because we now have access to the Construction Information Service); [...]
Change to e-book links on HiP
Chris L. and I have made a couple of changes to the way e-book links work on the public catalogue. I’ve put a message on the public blog about the most obvious difference – MyiLibrary titles now open up in a new browser window – this seemed to be something that annoyed a lot of [...]
Athens – light at the end of the tunnel!
Tim and Chris from the O.S.T. have set up a new and improved – but still strictly experimental – test installation of AthensDA, to fix the ongoing problem with direct login access to Fame, Westlaw et al. It seems to work! Give it a try with Mintel. If no problems come to light, we’ll make [...]
