L&LR Away Day 2009
Colleagues,
I’m pleased to share with you the agenda for the L&LR Away Day 2009.
The Away Day, planned by the Library Staff Development Group, will be take place on 10th June 2009, at the Conference Centre, Riseholme Park.
We look forward to welcoming all colleagues and offer our thanks to those who have kindly agreed to stay behind to deliver services in Hull and Brayford.
The Group have used your ideas and feedback to shape the agenda, including: ‘Library Question Time’, the invitation to Richard Wallis and Karen Reece, our external speakers and Tracey Flynn from the University Staff Learning & Development Team. Richard and Tracey have also agreed to act as external facilitators for the workshops and world café activities, respectively.
To help us finalise the arrangements for the day there are a couple of things we need you to do, by Friday 5th June. They are: sign up to your choice of workshops, following the instructions at the bottom of the agenda; submit your question for the ‘Library Question Time’ Panel.
Thank-you for your support.

ASL news – I’ve started!
Just to let you all know that I’ve now started as ASL for Psychology, Biological Sciences and Sports Science, covering for Alexis whilst she’s on maternity leave and job-sharing with Oonagh. Whilst I’m jointly responsible for all three subjects, my main responsibility will be Biological Sciences.
My hours are very complicated as I’m also continuing my role as Library Assistant at Riseholme. So, take note…I’m a Library Assistant at Riseholme Monday – until 12.30 on a Wednesday and an ASL at Brayford from 13.30 on a Wednesday – Friday. I’ll be at the Brayford on Wednesday afternoon and Friday and at Riseholme on Thursday as an ASL. Confused? So am I!
Please could you add me to your distribution lists so I don’t miss out on anything! I’ll be coming round to see you all (Brayford staff) sometime so you can fill me in on what’s been going on for the last few months.
ASL news!
We welcome Katie Robertson who has been appointed to cover Alexis’s maternity leave. Katie will job-share with Oonagh beginning on Wednesday 13 May, which is the maternity leave start date.

Blogging tip #3 – avoiding campus-ism
This is more of a departmental guideline than a tip… and it applies when writing for the Portal, Blackboard, etc., as well as for the blogs.
Try and remember the other 3 campuses! If you’re writing for a Brayford audience about something which only applies to Lincoln, then make it clear in the story (and by using tags) that it’s a GCW-specific story.
It’s equally a good idea to clearly signpost when it’s a Hull-, Riseholme- or Holbeach-specific blog posting – and, conversely, to explicitly say when a story applies across all campuses and L&LR centres.
This allows users to filter our blogs’ RSS feeds, if they want, so that they’re not getting stories which only relate to centres they don’t use. And it helps avoid any “misunderstandings”!
There’s more on this in the [still draft!] bloggers’ guidelines.
